Serra Preschool was founded by Lee Stillman and Dean Lyons, two women with gregarious children demanding to play with others. The mothers were spending much time getting together to have their children play, so they discussed the possibility of starting a co-op nursery school. By November 1965, they were deeply involved in organizing one. When they learned from the Social Welfare Department that they needed a sponsor, they went to Serra Elementary School PTA (now Palisades Elementary School PTA). The PTA did sponsor the preschool and the first session was held in June 1966. Vacant rooms, various elementary schools, and a church have served as the preschool's classrooms. At present, we are fortunate to use the Youth Activity Association facility located next to Las Palmas Elementary School.
